Hot Dog Recipes That Think Outside the Bun

We think hot dogs are pretty much the perfect food, and summer vacation is the perfect excuse to take your hot dogs to the next level.

Let Boxed Express deliver everything you need from franks to buns and all the best toppings, then try these 5 new tricks for an old fave.

The basics:

Hot Dog Taquitos

We love big buns and we cannot lie, but hello – hot dogs wrapped in tortillas? Oh yea! Thanks for the inspiration UrbanCookery.

Here’s how: Grill franks, wrap in Mission Flour Tortillas. Secure with a toothpick. Bake or deep fry.

Cole Slaw Dogs

Multitask and have your hot dog and side in one. Recipe by Pretty Prudent.

Here’s how: top grilled franks with creamy, crunchy Golden Taste Cole Slaw. Or try it with guacamole instead (trust us, it’s good).

Bacon and Egg Hot Dogs

The only way to improve a hot dog? Wrap it in bacon. Then #putaneggonit. You’re welcome.

Here’s how: chop up bacon (or turkey bacon) and fry until crispy, then grill franks. Meanwhile, fry 1 egg per dog. Slide the frank into a split bun and top with a fried egg.

Curly Hot Dogs

OK, so you’re thinking why would I go to all this effort for a hot dog. Here’s why: more room to catch the toppings! Crispy edges! Fun shape!

Here’s how: Insert a skewer in the center of each frank. Take a small knife, cut at an angle while rolling the frank away from you. Slide the frank off the skewer, stretch out the spirals, then grill.

Bahn Mi Dogs

If hot dogs are the perfect food, and the bahn mi is the perfect sandwich, then the bahn mi dog is a match made in long weekend heaven. Recipe inspired Julie Yoon.

Here’s how: shred 2 carrots and 2 cucumbers and quickly pickle them in 1 cup water, 1/4 cup sugar and 1/2 cup white vinegar for 1 hour. Make a Sriracha mayo by mixing 2 tsp Sriracha with 1/2 cup mayonnaise. Grill franks, slide into buns, squeeze over the Sriracha mayo and top with the pickled vegetables.
